Prof. Ehud Netzer

(1934 – 2010)

Professor Ehud Netzer, archaeologist and architect, directed the Herodium excavations from 1972 onward on behalf of the Hebrew University Institute of Archaeology; he was a world-renowned authority on Herodian architecture. Netzer excavated and studied many sites, among them Masada, Jericho, Caesarea and Sepphoris; he initiated, planned and brought about the opening of the Herodium National Park. In 2007, after many years of searching, the expedition he headed discovered Herod’s tomb on Herodium’s northern hill-side, and subsequently exposed the royal theater in its vicinity.
Netzer died in October 2010 after a site accident while working with the team at the Herodium theater. The void he left is still felt.
